Hazelwood School District's SAIL program is based on Joseph Renzulli's Enrichment Triad Model. In this program, gifted students are recognized as having three identifiable traits-- superior intellectual ability, creativity, and task commitment.
Upon entering the SAIL program, students must make a commitment to participate in activities and to produce an end product. Some activities require after-school involvement of the student. An Individual Education Plan for each student is based on the student's recognized areas of interest.

Identification of SAIL students and the qualifying process:
The identification process involves several steps before a student is actually placed in the program. The initial stage involves screening and referrals. Students are referred by teachers or other staff members based upon work ethic, grades and test scores. Several tests results are considered for the screening component such as MAP/Terra Nova and NNAT. The child must be evaluated in the areas of reasoning and ability with the following tests:
SAGES-2 I.Q. Test
The Hazelwood School District and the SAIL program follow the selection procedure as required by the State of Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. All of the following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the middle school SAIL program:
-
Students will complete the SAGES-2 Reasoning Screening Assessment and must score at or above the 75th percentile. This evaluation samples problem solving and general knowledge, one aspect of intelligence aptitude.
-
Students will complete an individualized I.Q. test and must score at or above the 95th percentile. This assessment renders an intelligence quotient, measuring cognitive ability.
-
Teachers and/or staff members will complete and submit a Gifted Characteristics Rating Scale for each student.
SAIL...ON
SAIL...ON is a program begun in the 2002-2003 school year for those gifted students in 9th grade in order to provide them with an additional year of activities similar to those in SAIL, but on a reduced time basis. SAIL...ON students are selected from those students who have successfully completed the SAIL program. We meet on Thursdays after school at Hazelwood West High School.
