Our High School Reform Efforts

Hazelwood East has been in the process of transforming our school for the last 3 years.  Two of those last three years has been working with High Schools that Work.  It is a nationally recognized program from SREB (Southern Regional Educational Board)  We have a coach that visits our school periodically to guide and direct our efforts to ensure that we are continually improving the programs here at our school.  If you want to learn more about High Schools that Work or SREB visit there website at.

This will be an ongoing process where the staff of Hazelwood East will look at how our students are performing with multiple measures and determine what processes need to be put into place in order to improve our school system.  We have organized our building into several task forces to address specific needs identified by our school reform task force.  We currently have 8 committees working to make changes to the system of education here at Hazelwood East.

Overall our goal is to ensure that the students at our school are provided with the best possible educational system that we can provide.  Every part of the schooling system is continually analyzed for results and evaluated for progress.  In the process of transforming our school we have used a process of research, design, piloting the plans, refinement and then implementation of each of the facets of the plan.  These plans involve changes to every part of the way our school system operates.  Our current plans of implementation are designed to take our school out to the 2010-2011 school years. 

The time line of our efforts as well as explanations of each of our focus groups is provided in the links to the documentation.  Additionally all the group leaders of the focus groups can be contacted with any suggestions or questions.  In the documents included on this page are the model that we use for all our meetings as well as our approach to problem solving.  In addressing meetings we always work through a facilitative approach to address issues. Our groups work to identify areas of need based upon data and then discuss the issues through probing questions that assist us in further understanding the causal factors that we need to consider.  When we begin to address plans to improve these areas we utilize our approach to problem solving.  This is a flow chart process that has worked very well for us here at Hazelwood East resulting in great programs with minimal oversights in the implementation of the programs.

We will be having informational meetings for our students and parents soon about next year’s new schedule, and building policies.  Look for a letter to be coming home soon to invite you to attend the meeting.
