Terryon Jones and Dasani Stewart, fourth grade students at Twillman Elementary School, did the right thing recently when they saw a lost schoolmate in their neighborhood one day after school.
“We saw him walking in a circle,” said Stewart of a first grade student who is new to Twillman. “We asked him if he knew where he lived but he said ‘no.’ We asked him, ‘Do you need help from us to take you home?’”
“We were by Dasani’s house and his friends were outside so we asked them to help us but they did not want to,” said Jones. “The first grader said there was a green Pontiac at his house.”
The older boys knew where such a car was parked in their neighborhood so they escorted the younger boy there and knocked on the front door.
“His mom told us, ‘Thank you so much for bringing him home. I’m glad he didn’t get hurt.’”
“Dasani and Terryon are new students to Twillman this year,” said Erin Brown, one of the fourth grade teachers. “They have quickly come to understand what it means to be a Twillman Tiger. They follow the Tiger Traits of being safe, cooperative, respectful, responsible and peaceful every day. I am very impressed with the way that they handled this situation. They showed everyone what it means to be a Twillman Tiger.”
“We helped him because he was little and he was lost,” said Stewart.
“I was feeling sorry for him because he was walking around in circles,” said Jones.
“Building relationships is one of the main areas we have worked on as a school community,” said Dr. Brenda Harris, Twillman’s principal. “Dasani and Terryon are examples of what that mental model looks and sounds like. These young men are the epitome of sensitivity, responsibility, as well as being relentless and empathic. We are so proud of them both in and out of the classroom.
“As Henry James states, ‘Three things in human life are important - The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. And the third is to be kind.’”
